How to Create a Realistic Waving Flag

First of all, check the snaps.

Using the Rectangle tool, make a long rectangle.

Hold down the Shift and Alt keys, drag the rectangle vertically down and change the colour.

Choose both the white and red rectangles. Hold the Shift and Alt keys down and drag down below the first two rectangles. They should snap into alignment. Press Control+D to duplicate several times. Then grab the red rectangle down below the last white rectangle and set it into place so that our flag ends with a red stripe.

In the upper left corner, form a green rectangle.

Make a 5 point star filled with white. Use the Scale tool to reduce the size. Alt+drag to place a star at the end. With the Blend tool duplicate the star 8 times.

Use Alt+drag down to duplicate. Press Control+D three more times.
Turn off snap. Choose all the stars and use the arrow tool to adjust placement.
At this point, group the flag pieces.

Apply an Envelope Mesh with the rows and columns set to four.

Choose Direct Selection tool. Pick a couple rows of points and hold the Shift key down and drag up.

Do the same on the opposite side.

Choose the very last row and drag down once more. Pick the last two rows, use the scale tool and set scale to 90%.

Finally, give the flag a Drop Shadow set at 39% Opacity, an X and Y value of 7 pt, and a Blur value of 0. Set to Colour and black.
